Why the new James Bond actor might be more surprising than we thought

A new report from Variety shed some light on the James Bond casting. The report notes that Tom Francis, a relative newcomer actor, had nabbed an audition for the role of Bond. Francis is best known for his work in theater and his role in 2025’s Jay Kelly.

Francis is one of many who will undoubtedly audition for the role, but his inclusion specifically is interesting. While other big stars have been heavily rumored for the role, Francis’ inclusion in the search could be a look into how Amazon is thinking in their casting decisions.

For some time, speculation around what Amazon has been looking for in its next Bond has run rampant. This month, though, we learned exactly what they wanted. Amazon recently locked in casting director Nina Gold to helm the search for the next Bond, who, speaking to Deadline, noted two major things. One, the actor must “ooze sex appeal,” something not too surprising given the past actors who have played Bond. Second, whoever they pick must be young enough to play the role for at least a handful of movies.

Knowing this information, it’s easy to see why someone like Francis is being eyed for the role. Not only is he a handsome lead, but his age, 26, pairs him perfectly with someone who could step into Bond for a long time. His status as a newcomer also means he won’t have a ton of obligations to fulfil should he get the role. Of course, his audition could also simply be more of a brief look of one of many actors.

Several other high-profile stars (including Jacob Elordi and Callum Turner) have been noted to be favorites for the role, and this could just be Amazon looking at other actors being zeroing in. Still, Francis’ inclusion gives us a window into what Amazon might be thinking and could be setting us up to not be too surprised if they pick a completely surprising actor for Bond.
