The slasher horror movie genre came to life in the 1970s, and it grew in popularity throughout the 1980s. By the time the 1990s arrived, it had slowly lost its popularity and ended up becoming more of a niche subgenre, rather than the norm for horror movies. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, there wasn't a more popular genre of horror, though, and names like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers became commonplace, even for non-horror movie fans.
