2026 has thus far been a somewhat bucking of the box-office trend. Summer blockbusters like Supergirl and Masters of the Universehave disappointed globally regardless of reviews, and once-reliable staples like the latest entry in the wider Despicable Me universe, Minions & Monsters, appear to be trending in a similar direction. Independent horror, however, is thriving like never before. It began with Mark Fischbach's Iron Lung challenging Sam Raimi's Send Help at the start of the year, but more recently, A24 has made enough cash to fill a furniture store thanks to Kane Parsons' $360 million liminal space smash hit, Backrooms. No film has shaken Hollywood quite like Curry Barker's Obsession, though.
