Lost was one of the biggest series of the 2000s, and no show will ever truly recreate its aura. Things started simple enough: a plane crashes on an island, and the survivors try to find a way to escape it while having to navigate the island's bizarre dangers. "Simple" is a subjective term, though, especially when it comes to this realm of television. Lost was a phenomenon, earning critical praise and a loyal fanbase right out of the gate. Millions were captivated week after week by this volley between humanizing backstories of complicated people and a thrillingly mysterious, let's say unlucky, present. Ah, yes, this goes back to when audiences didn't have to wait years in between TV seasons, when network television was still dominant, and when seasons could have 20-plus episodes and still stay on budget. One might think today that this is too many episodes for a season, but Lost's 20-plus-episode seasons are actually the ones worth watching. The shorter seasons are...different.
