ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese spoke with Eraser director Chuck Russell about the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger movie to celebrate it getting a 4K release on its 30th anniversary. Russell discussed the film’s use of technology, its iconic zoo scene, and more. Eraser is available to own on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and Digital on June 16, 2026.
“U.S. Marshal John Kruger (Arnold Schwarzenegger) ‘erases’ the lives and identities of people entering the Witness Protection Program. When his latest charge (Vanessa Williams) uncovers a deal to put a new superweapon in the wrong hands, it’s a do-or-die assignment. Kruger embarks on a high-octane action spree to protect her. As exciting as it is entertaining, Eraser is unstoppable,” says the official synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Chuck, it was also interesting revisiting Eraser because I feel like what separates it from a lot of classic Arnold action movies is its use of technology. You got the really cool rail guns, and a lot of the characters are very tech-savvy. How is it sort of embracing tech? It kind of gives the film an extra layer of personality, and it has a modern sensibility to it.
Chuck Russell: That’s wonderful. Thank you. Because that’s a big compliment. Arnold Schwarzenegger brought me that script. So it’s nice when the lead actor brings the director into a situation.
But I’m a big fan of tech and a big fan of near-future tech, and I dragged it into the movie. We did a director’s polish on the script, and the rail gun was something I was aware of and wanted to incorporate and try to keep kind of the government conspiracy element in, and this new technology, which now is commonly known, but at the time it was unknown.
Even guns that can look through walls and things like that, we’re aware that that technology is real. I actually got a back-channel compliment from Naval Intelligence after the movie was out, saying, “You got it right.” I was like, “Wow, okay.” That’s a big compliment, but thank you for noticing that.
Also, revisiting it, it’s so clear 30 years later, there is no screen presence quite like Arnold. Beyond just the pure physicality, what really stood out as so special about working with Arnold?
Arnold, he’s a champ. I mean, he’s a competitive manly man’s man, I think I could say. He’s also a sweetheart and has a great sense of humor. Arnold came from really nothing. I mean, his story is wild, and there are documentaries on it. But his position in the world was well earned, put it like that. He was laughed at originally when it came to Hollywood working out in gyms with this Austrian accent, saying he was gonna be a movie star right up front.
Then he pulled it off, and there’s a reason for it. He’s a very strong personality. He has a unique charisma in a room. Arnold is the room, and it’s just natural for him. But he’s also smart and kind, and there are a number of Arnolds beyond the competitive nature of the man. So he’s fascinating and fascinating on film.
You can’t really define stardom. I have a little radar for people that are up and coming. I love breaking new stars, but in Arnold’s case, the directing job was about taking the brand and seeing how far I could improve it.
The zoo fight sequence is just one of my favorites. You guys filmed in the old LA Zoo, which is so interesting to actually visit because all the infrastructure is there. It’s so cool. What stood out about just filming in that abandoned zoo?
Chuck Russell: It’s ghostly. We reoccupied it with monkeys here and different, different animals. I think a couple of cheetahs, and it is spooky walking around there. Even when the set was lit, my idea was that Vanessa Williams’ character is there for a contact, and it needed to be a very spooky environment, and we succeeded in that. I love that sequence. I was busy trying to do scenes I’d never seen in an Arnold movie. So, a shootout with a crocodile, pretty original for Arnold. It played very well only with Arnold.
Thanks to Chuck Russell for taking the time to talk about Eraser.
