BBC has officially renewed Nightsleeper for a second season following the success of the thriller’s debut run. However, the next season will take the series in a different direction, replacing the train-based setting. The renewal also comes with major changes both on-screen and behind the scenes as the show prepares for its return.

Nightsleeper renewed for Season 2 at BBC

Following the success of its debut season, Nightsleeper will return for a second season on the BBC. The series will take a different approach this time, moving away from the train-based story that was introduced in first season.

For season 2, the action will move to the Irish Sea, where a new thriller will unfold aboard a passenger ferry traveling between Belfast and Liverpool. The shift will also bring an entirely new cast, with original stars Joe Cole and Alexandra Roach not returning.

While discussing the new season, creator Nick Leather offered the new details. He said, “The passengers and crew on tonight’s Belfast to Liverpool passenger ferry are about to experience six hours of non-stop thrills and spills, secrets and lies, triumphs and tragedies.”

The second season will also arrive with a significant change behind the scenes. Season 2 production will be handled by Element Pictures, a Fremantle company. The first season was produced by Euston Films, another Fremantle label that ceased operations around the time the series debuted. Meanwhile, the second season was approved under BBC drama director Lindsay Salt, with Northern Ireland Screen supporting the production.

James Kent and Chris Baugh will direct the new season, while Leather remains attached as executive producer. Executive producers also include Kate Harwood, Rachel Dargavel, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Chris Aird, Gaynor Holmes, and Kent.

The renewal comes after Nightsleeper emerged as one of the BBC’s biggest drama successes in 2024. It became the broadcaster’s largest new drama launch of the year, with its opening episode attracting 8.5 million viewers. The show also performed strongly overseas, with distributor Fremantle selling the series to 176 territories.
