CBS News just lost one of its biggest stars, and she’s not staying quiet about why. The former 60 Minutes correspondent released a pointed statement addressing political bias and editorial independence at the network.

Cecilia Vega addresses her exit from 60 Minutes

Cecilia Vega addressed her departure from 60 Minutes after CBS News fired her on Thursday, Variety reported.

The correspondent said she fears “for the future of the legendary broadcast.” Her contract was not set to expire until March 2027. CBS also ousted correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi and top executives Tanya Simon and Draggan Mihailovich during the reorganization.

Vega directly accused the network of suppressing editorial independence under new leadership installed by parent company Paramount Skydance. She stated that “in recent months, my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories.”

She added that “reporting teams have held back on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions.” Vega called this “censorship, both imposed and self-driven” and deemed it “dangerous for the show and dangerous for democracy.”

The correspondent also suggested she lost her position for resisting directives from CBS News Editor in Chief Bari Weiss. She said she “held the line and refused to incorporate suggestions that offend the conscience.” Vega further noted she is “far from the only 60 Minutes correspondent who has asked herself, ‘What is my personal red line?'”

CBS News pushed back against Vega’s characterization of events at the program. A network spokesperson stated, “We respect Ms. Vega and her contributions, but her claims are not based in reality.” The network simultaneously announced the hiring of Nick Bilton as the new executive leading the show. Bilton previously worked at The New York Times and Vanity Fair.

Vega joined 60 Minutes in 2023 from ABC News, where she served as chief White House correspondent. She highlighted her historic role as the first Latina correspondent on the program. She closed her statement by declaring, “Today I lost an amazing job. But I still have my integrity.”
