Even the most eagle-eyed viewers seemingly overlooked a key thematic easter egg in Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. Weeks after the season wrapped up, the show’s cinematographer, Hillary Fyfe Spera, explained the meaning behind it and how it makes for an “interesting flip.”

Before it became part of the MCU, Netflix’s Daredevil series explored multiple themes, especially the concept of good vs. evil. It was quite evident in its story, but the show also used imagery to convey them in subtle yet powerful ways. Now, with the MCU series, Daredevil: Born Again, it seems that very little has changed.
In an interview with CBR, cinematographer Hillary Fyfe Spera spoke about using specific colors to represent Kingpin and Daredevil in Season 2.
“There is this thing about hiding in plain sight — he’s not hiding at all,” she said while discussing Kingpin. “He’s very, very bold, and he’s like this white oppressive-toned thing. It’s the opposite of what you think of when you think of a light, heavenly figure that’s supposed to be peaceful and the savior.”
The show often shows Wilson Fish/Kingpin wearing a white suit, similar to his portrayal in the comics. While the color white typically represents light and goodness, the showrunners used it to do the opposite.
On the other hand, Daredevil’s suit in Season 2 was black with a small amount of red highlights. Notably, people often associate black with darkness or evil. However, the cinematographer believes that having the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen save people while dressed in black subverts those expectations.
“Daredevil being the vigilante savior in black is a really interesting flip,” Spera shared. “I think to me, it speaks to the fact that they’re kind of two sides of one coin. They are ultimately completely linked as characters and as their myths. So it was fun to play with that,” she added.
Both seasons of Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on Disney+.
