Matthew Lillard apparently tried to spill the beans on his Man of Tomorrow casting back in March, but nobody was paying close enough attention to catch it. A resurfaced interview clip now reveals the Scream star was dropping breadcrumbs about joining the DCU sequel long before Deadline made it official.

Matthew Lillard teased he was in Man of Tomorrow much earlier

Deadline revealed on May 6 that Matthew Lillard joined the cast of DC Studios’ Man of Tomorrow. The actor’s role in the Superman sequel remains undisclosed at this time. James Gunn writes and directs the film, which currently holds a July 9, 2027, release date.

Brandon Davis shared a clip from a March interview with Lillard on X on May 7. Davis wrote that he felt Lillard “was trying to tell me he was cast in Man of Tomorrow without telling me he was cast in Man of Tomorrow.” The journalist noted the interview was “recorded back in March,” weeks before the official casting news broke.

In the clip, Lillard hinted at an upcoming project without naming it directly. He told Davis, “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say it, but I’m working on a project pretty soon.” The actor then joked about appearing in “probably Superman too” before adding, “Why not?”

Lillard also expressed his desire to work with Gunn again during the interview. He said, “I have been longing to be in the MCU, in the DCU now, as part of his crew.” The two previously collaborated on 2002’s Scooby-Doo and its 2004 sequel, both written by Gunn.

Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, reprising their roles as Superman and Lex Luthor. Rachel Brosnahan, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Lars Eidinger also feature in the cast. Lillard recently reprised his role as Stu Macher in 2026’s Scream 7 and portrayed William Afton in the Five Nights at Freddy’s films.

The DCU sequel is currently in production, with Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface all arriving before it in 2026.
