Geena Davis speaks out about the cancellation of one of Netflix’s biggest recent hits. The series is executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers and was canceled after just one critically acclaimed season.
Geena Davis addresses The Boroughs cancellation
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Davis revealed how the cast discovered The Boroughs’ cancellation. “Fortunately, the producers, who became our dear, dear friends, were able to tell us before the news came out, and we’re all terribly disappointed,” Davis said. “Honestly, I don’t know what happened.”
Davis was also confused about why The Boroughs was canceled despite its popularity. “I think it’s probably rare for a show to not get picked up and to have it announced that it’s not being picked up while it’s still in the top 10,” she said. “We didn’t expect that.”
According to a previous report, the show was canceled due to its weak long-tail growth potential. The series debuted to modest viewership and eventually dropped to lower numbers, which was disappointing for a show coming from Stranger Things’ Duffer brothers.
While The Boroughs may be canceled, Davis said that she was happy that the season ended without a major cliffhanger, telling its own story. Davis added, “But the creators told us from the beginning that the series was not going to have a cliffhanger ending to the first season, that someone had advised them, ‘Make it its own thing. And if you come back to do another year, make that its own thing.’ And we really did. There’s a tiny hint at the end that maybe everything isn’t fixed, but it is a complete story. And if we had made it as a limited series, then it would’ve been a big hit and everybody would be happy.”

The show’s synopsis reads, “In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer’s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their ‘golden years’ are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expects.”
Besides Davis, The Boroughs stars Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Denis O’Hare, and Clarke Peters. Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews serve as its creators, showrunners, and executive producers.
The Boroughs can be streamed on Netflix.
