Doctor Who Boss Shares Exciting Casting Update for the 16th Doctor

Almost one year after Doctor Who bid farewell to its fifteenth Doctor on a controversial note, showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed a massive casting update about the new protagonist of the British sci-fi series. The veteran television producer, in a recent interview, finally revealed when fans can expect to receive official news regarding who the 16th Doctor Who will be.

During a June 1 interview, the veteran screenwriter and producer declared that the BBC is planning to share a major briefing regarding the casting of the new Doctor Who.

“You will get an announcement,” Russell T Davies stated on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. “There is a press release lumbering through the BBC…So I promise you that in about a week or two weeks, there will be some sort of press release.”

While fans have been waiting for an announcement about the next Doctor Who casting for some time now, Davies has been on the same train since Ncuti Gatwa left the role in 2025. Talking about the delay in updates regarding the 16th Doctor Who, Davies said the process is “like the Jurassic period” where “57 people have to sign off on every single word.”

While the Queer as Folk creator confirmed that the BBC will soon share a significant update on the fan-favorite sci-fi series, he added, “I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say that. You know this place.” Moreover, Davies shared that he “won’t be back filming anything until next year,” thus confirming that no Doctor Special Christmas special will be in production this year.

In May 2025, Ncuti Gatwa, who served as the fifteenth Doctor Who, parted ways with the British series after playing the part for two years. Last year’s season finale saw Gatwa’s titular character sacrifice himself and regenerate as Billie Piper, who previously played fan-favorite companion Rose Tyler.

While many expected Piper to take over Gatwa as the sixteenth Doctor Who, the BBC has yet to share any confirmation on the topic.
