Backrooms is a science fiction horror film, marking the feature-length directorial debut of Kane Parsons. The movie is based on Parsons’ web series of the same name, which in turn is inspired by the “Backrooms” creepypasta, which originated in a 2019 4chan thread.

Backrooms follows Clark, a troubled loner, who discovers a mysterious doorway in his basement, which leads to an infinite maze of empty rooms. Clark becomes consumed with exploring this other-dimensional space, called the Backrooms. However, when he disappears inside the maze one day, Clark’s therapist, Mary, ventures down into the Backrooms to find him.

Speaking at the CCXP Mexico in April 2026, Parsons opened up about the driving concept behind the film. “I always try to stay away from the idea that the backrooms is somehow a dreamy headspace thing where, if you turn around, the room could have changed,” he said.

Parsons added, “It preys on the human brain’s ability to map spaces and understand them. The hard part for that is, if you go back the way you came, you will go back the way you came, but it just keeps going and going and going. That’s where the confusion and the convolution goes. So eventually, you just have to give up trying to map it, whereas if it were constantly changing, you would be giving up a lot faster” (via The Hollywood Reporter)
