Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) is beloved by Emmerdale began her tenure in the Dales as somewhat of an antagonist.

Emerging as the neglectful and problematic mother of Amy Wyatt (Chelsea Halfpenny and Natalie Ann Jamieson), she was initially a character we loved to hate, but as with many soap baddies, she found a way into our hearts and has remained there ever since.

‘She’s done a lot of growing up, hasn’t she?’ Laura said of Kerry’s evolution.

‘She’s always loved and felt love, I think she’s just never been very good at showing it. She was such a car crash when she came in. I guess these past fifteen years there’s been a lot of growing up, hasn’t there?’

A big part of that is the relationships she’s forged along the way. She eventually became what Amy needed, despite remaining a fierce, fun-loving party animal, and her motherly bond with Amelia also softened her.

Her relationship with sham-husband, Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell), who, alongside his late-wife, Val (Charlie Hardwick), initially took Amy on in her absence, has also gone a long way in reinforcing why we love her so much.

‘They are both loveable rogues in very different ways,’ Laura pondered in a chat with Metro as to why she and Eric bond so well.

‘She owes him a lot. Because when Amy came to the village, they took her on and adopted her, if you will, and looked after her. And since Amy’s passed, she feels like this is her duty.

‘She’s got to look after him, but she genuinely loves him. There was a lovely line in a scene, she says, ‘I never had a dad. I love him like a dad. He’s the only dad I ever had’.

‘She’s never had that male figure in her life because they do genuinely love each other and although they bicker at times, she has got his best interest at heart and she absolutely adores Jacob [Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant)] as well. She’s ended up getting a little family unity out of it.’

Hmm, yes, Jacob. The very same Jacob who’s life has been made an abject horror by his insidious former-boss, Dr Todd (Caroline Harker). Despite being fully aware of what an utter cow she is, Kerry showed absolutely no fear in taking her on.

‘It just makes her a fully rounded character, doesn’t it? This is why I’ve said so many times before. I sound like a broken record. But I do feel like I won the lottery with this character because there is scope to play so much range,’ Laura said.

‘She has got a heart. She has got a lot of love to give. She’s fierce. She’s a party animal. She’s quite complex. She has no filter but also, she’s very caring.’

Why did Kerry so eagerly take up for Jacob?

‘She’s got this family unit, she lost her daughter and Jacob lost his mum at the same time during the same incident. She carries probably a bit of misplayed guilty, over trying to help Leyla and she didn’t make it.

‘She lost her child, so there’s a bit of misplaced guilt going on. What she never gave Amy, she’s trying to fix it by being good to him. She loves him to bits. He’s such a good boy.

The second she sees someone being unkind she’s like ‘I know your game, and I’m not letting it happen. You won’t get away with bullying him’. She can’t keep her mouth shut. She jumps straight in.’

While the Dales’ newest big bad is currently feuding with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), Kerry is about to find herself wrapped up in new step-son Archie Breckle’s (Kai Assi) AI schemes.

Is Kerry knowledgeable about what the young’un is up to? According to Laura, not really!

‘She’s very confused. They have a big to-do about it. She pulls him on it, and there’s a bit of a to-do where she’s trying to get him to explain what’s going on because she’s really freaked out about it.

‘She thinks it’s really weird or creepy and she can’t work it out so she really slams her foot down on it to try and get him to explain to her what’s going on. And obviously he doesn’t immediately tell her the truth, she has to chase around and work it all out for herself.

Is there something to be learned from the plot?

‘It’s scary, isn’t it? There’s things sometimes that I look at on the internet and I can’t tell. I’m literally asking people ’is that real?’ It’s so clever.

My dad was going on about getting scammed the other day. There’s this thing where someone will get a text and it will say ‘hi dad, texting you on someone else’s number because my phone’s broke’.

Because it says Dad, they automatically assume that it’s you and respond asking you what you need help with. It’s that kind of thing and I think for my parents watching that, it’s little thing to be aware of really wary of this so you can say ‘I saw this on telly. Actually I’m going to be really wary of this.’ Of course it’s hugely important.’
