Euphoria’s creator just revealed why the Season 3 finale had to end the way it did. Sam Levinson explained the heartbreaking decision behind the show’s most shocking death and its deeply personal connection.
Sam Levinson breaks down Euphoria Season 3 finale’s biggest death
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson revealed why Rue Bennett had to die in the Season 3 finale through a behind-the-scenes video. In the now-series finale, Zendaya’s character overdoses after taking fentanyl-laced Percocet, a painkiller given to her by Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).
“The honest ending is people like Rue don’t make it,” Levinson said. The death parallels how former cast member Angus Cloud passed away in 2023 (via BBC). Levinson added that he likely would not have survived if he faced his addiction struggles today.
“People relapse. They f— up. They’re not ready to get clean, and they weren’t dying like they are now with the influx of fentanyl into this country,” he said. “I wanted to tell the story for Angus and for people who aren’t granted a second chance.”
The death happens around the halfway point of the finale, just 45 minutes in. Ali (Colman Domingo), Rue’s sponsor, finds her dead on his couch the following morning. He then sets out on a path of revenge against Alamo.
“I knew that I wanted to experience Rue’s death through him,” Levinson explained. “Letting Colman articulate that, for us as an audience, is really important.” Ali ultimately kills Alamo with three bullets inside the Silver Slipper.
“It was nice to take Ali out of the box and have him dance with other players,” Domingo said. Meanwhile, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Maddy (Alexa Demie) struggle with mounting debt while hiding Nate’s (Jacob Elordi) death. Levinson described their bond as the true “love story” of the final season.
“I’ve always been against utopian storytelling,” Levinson said. “I also wanted to tell a story about grief and the emotional turmoil that it can create.”
All three seasons of Euphoria are now available to stream on HBO Max.
