Fast & Furious Star Says the Franchise Has ‘Lost’ Its Way

The Fast & Furious star whose stoic car lean launched a million memes believes the blockbuster series he helped build has drifted too far from its roots. Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), the actor reflected on how a return to authentic community spirit could steer the multi-billion-dollar franchise back on course.

The Fast and Furious saga has evolved from underground street racing into a spectacle of physics-defying stunts, space travel and world-saving missions. Yet Sung Kang, who has played fan-favourite Han Lue across multiple instalments, suggests this relentless escalation came at a cost.

Speaking at SDCC about his independent film Drifter, Kang admitted to Collider the franchise may have “lost our way to a degree.” He framed the observation not as criticism but as an offer born from experience. “I will speak up and not to be a squeaky wheel, but to share what I’ve learned making Drifter, to share how amazing this car community is,” Kang said.

“Perhaps I’ll go back to why the Fast & Furious franchise resonated with so many people globally. Maybe we lost our way to a degree. Maybe we can come back to that.” The lessons Kang wants to carry forward stem directly from how Drifter got made. Shut out by traditional financiers who failed to grasp his vision, he turned to the automotive community that has supported him since childhood.

“Every dollar of the financing, all the cars, the location, the drivers. We don’t have any CGI or visual effects driving. It’s all practical,” Kang revealed. “Drivers from all over the world brought their cars. They built cars for me.” That grassroots approach peaked during the film’s finale. “So, it really was community, from the actors to everything in the film.”
