In one last push before its release, The Mandalorian & Grogu has earned an even better box office forecast. There were worries that this upcoming film, which brings the Star Wars franchise back to the silver screen after a six-year hiatus, would be a spinoff that won’t gain much traction. There were fears that it would flop like 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story and that casual moviegoers would rather prefer The Mandalorian Season 4 or that they would feel like they need to watch all three seasons of the Disney+ series to understand the context of the movie. But Disney has been wisely frugal on the production budget for The Mandalorian & Grogu, so the film will have an easier time making a profit than the usual Star Wars outing.
Final box office predictions for The Mandalorian movie have surged
The latest box office prediction for Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu has it earning $90 million, or in the range from $81 million to $96 million, in its domestic opener from May 22 to May 24. If we include pre-sale numbers on Thursday, May 21, this figure is expected to climb to $105 million for its 4-day domestic opening weekend.
These latest numbers are based on the May 15 report from BoxOfficeTheory and is a sizeable increase from the predictions earlier in the month. The figures from May 11 had the film getting $74 million to $90 million, so this new forecast is about $7 million higher, showing that it is gaining more momentum. The report believes that the film “continues to align mostly with recent expectations with another small uptick” and that “early social media reactions from critics’ screenings are observably positive on the whole.” However, it remains to be seen whether the movie’s marketing push toward being a family-friendly flick, in a similar vein to Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary earlier this year, will make it more appealing to casual moviegoers over the Memorial Day weekend.
Over the film’s entire theatrical run in the US and Canada, the report projects that The Mandalorian & Grogu is on track to make $224 million, which is closer to the upper bound of its $166 million to $239 million range. This is comparable to Solo: A Star Wars Story that had a $84 million domestic opener and earned $213 million domestically, which is about 54% of its worldwide haul. However, it’s still much lower than the box office success that was 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, another spinoff that had a huge $155 million domestic opener on its way to a $1.05 billion worldwide total, which was essentially split down in the middle between its domestic and international performances.
The good news is that The Mandalorian & Grogu is one of most cost-efficient Star Wars films to date. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the budget for the film is $165 million, though it’s not clear whether this is before or after Disney earned $21 million in tax credits from California for filming the bulk of the movie in the state, instead of having to spend a lot of money on travel expenses for filming elsewhere on location. To keep the costs low, the production was able to leverage many of the assets from the show and use ILM StageCraft, creating environmental backgrounds with tall, 360-degree LED video screens to avoid expensive post-production digital effects.
In contrast, both Solo: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: Episode 9 had a much higher budget of $275 million. For a conservative estimate, if we follow the standard rule that wide-release films need to make 2.5 times its budget to break even, The Mandalorian & Grogu will need to reach the $415 million milestone before it makes a profit. With these stronger box office projections, the odds that the movie will be a success are higher, though it will likely need to be a huge hit for Disney to consider a sequel.
That said, ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim was not impressed with the film in his review, calling it “a low-stakes Star Wars movie.”
