A beloved sci-fi cult favorite is returning with a new adventure more than two decades later. Firefly is getting a brand-new comic series, bringing the crew of Serenity back into action. Fans have continued supporting the series for years, and now they will have another chance to revisit one of science fiction’s most enduring worlds.
Firefly returns with brand new comic series
Dynamite Entertainment has officially unveiled Firefly #1, a new comic book series that will continue exploring the universe first introduced by Joss Whedon’s television show in 2002. The publisher also released a first look at several covers for the debut issue, giving fans their first glimpse at the franchise’s latest revival (via ScreenRant).
The new series will be written by Eisner Award winner Mark Russell, with artwork from Lorenzo Re. According to the official synopsis, the story follows Captain Malcolm Reynolds as he struggles to find enough money to keep Serenity operational. At the same time, Simon Tam and Kaylee Frye pose as a married couple to carry out a heist. Things quickly become complicated when their past comes knocking.
One detail has particularly caught fans’ attention. Promotional artwork appears to feature both Shepherd Book and Hoban “Wash” Washburne. Since both characters died during the events of the 2005 film Serenity, many readers believe the comic may take place before the movie. Dynamite has not confirmed where the series fits within the timeline.
Although Firefly lasted only 14 episodes, it developed a passionate following. The show had elements of both science fiction and western themes, creating what many fans called a space western.
Set in a future where humanity has abandoned Earth and settled across a new star system, the series followed the crew of Serenity as they took on jobs while avoiding the powerful Alliance government.
Even today, it holds an impressive IMDb rating of 8.9/10 and an audience rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
