Long before fantasy became a publishing category, stories of gods, monsters, and magical worlds already existed in myth and epic poetry, most famously in works like Homer’s The Odyssey. Greek mythology, along with other ancient storytelling traditions, helped shape many of the narrative foundations on which modern fantasy would later build. In that sense, it seems only fitting that the best fantasy book of the last decade would circle back to Greek mythology.
