The latest issue of DC Comics’ Green Lantern Corps has introduced a new, incredibly powerful Lantern. Over the years, the series’ storytelling has constantly evolved, placing some of its iconic members in unique situations. For instance, earlier this year, Guy Gardner assumed the mantle of Allsight after reaching a new cosmic state and gaining near-omniscience.
DC debuts new Orange Lantern
Green Lantern Corps Issue #16, written by Morgan Hampton and illustrated by Will Conrad, Juan José Ryp, and Matt Herms, introduces a new Orange Lantern, Effigy.
In the comic, the Manhunters face all Lantern Corps in battle, demonstrating their overwhelming strength that rivals even Sinestro’s. Subsequently, the leaders decide to channel the emotional entities, including Parallax, driving their powers. In the process, Ophidian, the physical embodiment of greed or avarice, chooses Effigy as its host.
Surprised, Effigy asks Ophidian why it chose him. The entity responds that the obvious candidate, Larfleeze a.k.a Agent Orange, has corroded its power and that it needs a fresh host — preferably someone who can share and spread selfishness instead of hoarding it.
Upon merging with Ophidian, Effigy releases a very powerful energy blast that turns him into a supernova and destroys the sun. Consequently, a black hole forms, and the Lanterns are spaghettified after entering, despite their bond with the emotional entities and Guy Gardner’s Allsight powers.
It’s currently unclear if Effigy will permanently be an Orange Lantern.
Traditionally, Orange Lanterns have only had one member, the aforementioned Larfleeze. Being the only true member and sole representative, he amassed his army by killing other individuals and possessing their bodies, due to his unwillingness to share his power.
Effigy becoming an Orange Lantern may change things up for the Green Lantern Corps lore. However, this isn’t the first time someone besides Larfleeze assumed the power. Notably, during Blackest Night, Superman’s archnemesis, Lex Luthor, fueled by greed among other negative traits, briefly became an Orange Lantern.
Green Lantern Corps Issue #16 from DC Comics is now available in stores. It is also accessible through DC Universe Infinite.
