ABC recently granted a straight-to-series order to Shonda Rhimes‘ untitled Grey’s Anatomy Texas spin-off. This served as the long-running medical drama franchise’s third TV spin-off following Private Practice and Station 19. The newest Grey’s Anatomy series will be different from the main show and previous spin-offs in a big way.
How Grey’s Anatomy’s Texas spin-off will differ from past shows?
For the first time in the hit TV franchise’s history, the untitled Grey’s Anatomy spin-off will take place far from the West Coast or the big city, as the story will be set at a rural West Texas medical center. This is something fans could look forward to, especially if they’re getting tired of the franchise’s usual city format. It also allows the franchise to deliver more complicated and challenging medical stories that are common and exclusive to rural locations.
Described as an “edgy drama,” the upcoming spin-off will introduce Grey’s Anatomy fans to a new team of medical professionals, giving long-time viewers fresh new perspectives. According to executive producer Meg Marinis‘ recent statement, despite the new characters and stories, she assured fans that the upcoming show will retain the “same heart, emotion, and connection audiences have loved” from the original. This will also be the first Grey’s Anatomy spin-off that won’t revolve around a series regular from the main show, unlike Kate Walsh’s Addison in Private Practice and Jason George’s Ben in Station 19.
At the moment, it remains unknown how the new spin-off will connect to the main show, but a recent report teased that it might involve Debbie Allen’s character, Catherine Fox. In Grey’s Anatomy, Catherine is a famous and brilliant urologist who was introduced as Jackson Avery’s mother. She’s also the head of the prestigious Catherine Fox Foundation, which owns many hospitals across the country, including Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. It’s unclear if franchise lead Ellen Pompeo would reprise her role as Meredith Grey in the new show since she’s currently attached as an executive producer.
The untitled medical drama series is created, written, and executive-produced by Rhimes and Marinis. The latter has been the main series’s showrunner for over two years now, and part of the creative team since 2006. Betsy Beers has also signed on as an executive producer. It is a production by Shondaland and 20th Television.
