The new A24 Hugh Jackman movie, titled The Death of Robin Hood, is getting mixed reactions. The film, which is directed by Michael Sarnoski, is scheduled to hit United States theaters next week.

Sarnoski previously directed 2021’s Pig and 2024’s A Quiet Place: Day One. His new movie is an adaptation of a 17th-century ballad titled Robin Hood’s Death, with Jackman (The Sheep Detectives, X-Men) playing the titular character. The cast also includes Jodie Comer (28 Years Later, Free Guy), Bill Skarsgãrd (It: Welcome to Derry, Barbarian), Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus, Opus), and Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place, Hamnet).

What are people saying about The Death of Robin Hood?

The Death of Robin Hood has now screened for some critics, and reactions to the film are starting to pop up online. Some viewers aren’t too high on the movie, with Next Best Picture’s Matt Neglia calling it a “grim march to an inevitable conclusion” that is “bleak even by Michael Sarnoski’s standards.” Bitesize Breakdown founder Nick van Dinther called it a “long and arduous watch” that features a “vague and disconnected story.”

THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD lives up to its title as it’s a grim march to an inevitable conclusion for its titular character played with raw intensity, ruggedness, and weathered gravitas by Hugh Jackman. Although THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD has its moments, it was a long and arduous watch. Some solid performances aren't able to make up for the vague and disconnected story. This one just didn't work for me. #TheDeathOfRobinHood

the death of robin hood or: the snore-thman. really great for about 30 minutes or so, only to become a complete slog. very picturesque and well-acted, but that's kinda it. really disappointing work from michael sarnoski. pic.twitter.com/tXMIctxujb

Others, however, are feeling more positively toward the movie, with critic Courtney Howard saying it is a “bold” and “brutal” film that is a “kinetic, brilliant new generational legend and a profound rumination on mortality.” Meanwhile, critic Junior Felix called it “ferociously EPIC” and said that it is “hands down one of the years best.”

Michael Sarnoski’s #TheDeathOfRobinHood RIPS!Bold & brutal, this is a kinetic, brilliant new generational legend and a profound rumination on mortality. Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer & Bill Skarsgård are unassailably exceptional. Pat Scola’s cinematography, exhilarative & painterly pic.twitter.com/g1OkNJNARs

Exactly what I've come to expect from a Sarnoski film. It's patient, meditative, contemplative, and deeply inward-looking for long stretches, and then, out of nowhere, it reminds you that nobody does brutal quite like him. 1/2
