One of Lionsgate’s divisive World War II movies starring Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson has finally found a new streaming home. This comes over two years after the Guy Ritchie-directed film was first released in theaters. As of today, Cavill’s 2024 movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is officially available to stream on Peacock.
What do we know about Henry Cavill’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare movie?
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was based on Damien Lewis’ 2014 book, “Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII.” In the film, Cavill and Ritchson’s characters are part of a rogue special-forces unit enlisted by Winston Churchill to intercept Nazi supply lines through unconventional means.
The ensemble cast also included Eiza González, Alex Pettyfer, Babs Olusamokun, Henrique Zaga, Til Schweiger, Henry Golding, and Cary Elwes. Compared to its 68% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has received a significantly higher Popcornmeter score at 91%.
“It tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials, including author Ian Fleming,” reads the film’s synopsis. “The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly ‘ungentlemanly’ fighting techniques. Ultimately, their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern Black Ops warfare.”
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was directed by Guy Ritchie, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, and Arash Amel. The movie was produced by Chad Oman, Ivan Atkinson, and John Friedberg for Black Bear, with Scott Lastaiti, Olga Filipuk, Damien Lewis, Tamasy, and Johnson serving as executive producers. Despite its all-star cast, the movie underperformed at the box office. It only grossed around $29.8 million against a budget of $60 million.
