I had sex in a meeting room at work – it was awful

‘I never want to do this ever again,’ I said flatly to my colleague, Ryan*.

He had just orgasmed and was staring at me, out of breath, confused by my tone.

I, meanwhile, couldn’t believe what I had done. I had just had sex at my then-workplace.

I quickly pulled on my underwear and opened the door of the meeting room. Looking around, making sure the coast was clear, I left Ryan half-undressed behind me.

I could hear him flapping his belt, rushing to put it on, as I left – and he speed-walked out of the room after me, as I got into one of the elevators alone.

I immediately bumped into him downstairs after he’d taken the other lift. ‘Go the other way,’ I hissed. Abruptly, he turned on his heels and disappeared down the corridor.

Sighing, I turned the corner into the open-plan area I worked in: to be faced with my work-bestie, who was giving me an obvious ‘I know what you did’ smile.

I hurried her into the bathroom, and made her promise not to tell anyone.

‘Everyone knows you’re seeing Ryan,’ she shrugged.

‘Yeah, but no one can know we had sex in the office. It’s just wrong.’

Calling sex with Ryan ‘wrong’ was not something you would have expected to hear from me when I first saw him all those years ago. I caught sight of him when I walked into the office in my new dream job as a designer for a creative agency – and I was utterly enamoured.

He was tall and handsome, with dark hair and broad shoulders. His smile was perfect.

‘Great,’ I thought. ‘Someone to get me in trouble’.

And he did.

In my first week, a few of us went for work drinks and Ryan and I flirted all night. At first, I’d just catch him smiling at me out of nowhere, and then it was intense. After a few drinks, he called me ‘the hottest girl in the office’.

By the end of the night, everyone else had left; and as we walked to the station, he kissed me.

‘I don’t want a relationship,’ I blurted out, having just come out of a really difficult situationship with a long-distance heartbreak.

‘Sure,’ he smiled and kissed me again.

The next day we were smiling at each other in meetings and texting nude photos back and forth.

A month later, we had slept with each other a few times. Usually I would end up at his, since he lived close to the office, and we’d always stumble there after work drinks. It had become so regular, just the idea of having work drinks got me excited.

Only a handful of people knew about us – mostly my work bestie and a few others who started saying things like, ‘Can you stop looking at each other and smiling, it’s freaking me out’.

Then the fateful day came.

We had been sleeping together for two months now and, since it was a hot day, I was wearing a short skirt. I indicated to him that this would be ‘easy access’ after cornering him in the communal kitchen.

Laughing, he suggested we book a meeting room.

I stopped laughing.

‘We should 100% book a meeting room,’ I answered, breathlessly.

I had evidently not thought this through – I simply wanted to have sex. I didn’t consider the implications of doing something like that.

I certainly didn’t stop to think that it could get me fired.

I rushed off to book a room for an hour later, on the top floor, which hadn’t had renovations done yet and still had lockable rooms.

When the time came, I casually got up from my desk, carrying my laptop as part of my ploy, and went to the lift. I could hear him coming towards me –until he was stopped.

‘Ryan! Are you coming for a drink tonight?’

Someone had started a conversation with him and I sighed. I wasn’t going to have the fun lift make-out session I so desperately wanted. The lift came, I walked in and turned around to face him looking right at me while trying to escape this colleague.

I smiled as the door shut. Then I looked up at the corner of the lift, where a camera looked back at me.

I sighed again, this time in relief – we would have definitely been caught if he was in the lift with me.

But my relief was short-lived. In fact, that was the moment the dread began to rise.

As I started walking to the meeting room, I found myself looking around for cameras. Luckily there were none – at least, that I could see.

As I opened the meeting room door, I heard Ryan rushing in behind me. He immediately started kissing me passionately before undoing his pants, declaring how thinking about this moment had been keeping him erect ever since we’d booked the room.

That turned me on, but I still felt awful. Usually, sex with him was great – but I didn’t even bother to try and orgasm this time. All I could think about was the possibility of losing my job.

He came quickly, and that’s when I said we couldn’t do this ever again.

It came out of the blue to him, but I had just started a new job. In that moment, I couldn’t believe I was possibly letting a man destroy everything for me.

We stopped sleeping together after that – he was hurt, I think. And I just felt dread every time I even thought about striking things back up again.

I managed to stay in my dream job for a few years before moving on elsewhere, and leaving him behind.

It was nice to know I had self-control and was able to put myself ahead of good-looking men.

But I learned my lesson – I never had sex in an office again.
