Why Tom Francis could be the new James Bond actor

Recently, a new report from Variety shed some light on James Bond’s casting. The report notes that Tom Francis, a relative newcomer actor, had nabbed an audition for the role of Bond. Francis is best known for his work in theater and his role in 2025’s Jay Kelly.

Francis is one of many who will undoubtedly audition for the role, but his inclusion specifically is interesting. While he may not have the name recognition of Jacob Elordi or Callum Turner, here’s three reasons why Francis could be a surprisingly good pick for the role.

1) His career in the theater helps him play a litany of roles

Francis may not have the resume of a big star, but he’s no slouch when it comes to acting. The young star has had several big roles in the world of theater. These include playing major parts in both West End and Broadway productions, including a role in Sunset Boulevard, which earned him a Laurence Olivier Award as well as a Tony Award nomination.

While this might confuse some, theater has actually played a huge role in finding Bond’s of the past. When Daniel Craig was cast as Bond, he was already an accomplished movie star, but he also had a ton of work in theater as well. This made him an attractive pick for producers, who viewed him as someone who could showcase a wide-range of emotions and versatility, the same thing that could be helping Francis nab an audition for the role.

2) Francis fits the current checklist Amazon is looking for

Speculation around what Amazon has been looking for in its next Bond has run rampant. This month, however, we learned exactly what they want. Amazon recently locked in casting director Nina Gold to helm the search for the next Bond, who, speaking to Deadline, noted two major things.

One, the actor must “ooze sex appeal,” something not too surprising given the past actors who have played Bond. Second, whoever they pick must be young enough to play the role for at least a handful of movies. Knowing this information, it’s easy to see why someone like Francis is being eyed for the role. Not only is he a handsome lead, but he’s 26. His status as a newcomer also means he won’t have as many obligations should he get the role.

3) His newcomer status could help him in more ways than one

Francis’ status as a relative newcomer to the world of acting might have some downsides. However, depending on how you look at it, it could also be a big boon to his chances. We don’t know exactly what Amazon MGM Studios is looking for when it comes to Bond, but picking someone like Francis, who has little in the way of a fanbase, could allow for him to be completely wrapped up in the role and establish a new era for the spy series in the process.

After picking an already established star in Daniel Craig, going with Francis could be a big pivot that Amazon is looking for. With no real history to speak of, Francis could make a name for himself as Bond, and thus grow with the franchise as he continues to star in movies. He’d also add a brand new energy to the franchise that previously wasn’t there and that couldn’t be accomplished with a more veteran actor stepping into the role.
