James Gunn has officially put one of the rumors surrounding DC’s new Gorilla Grodd show to bed. He clarified that a title making the rounds online was never the official name. The clarification comes as curiosity keeps growing around the quirky series, which pairs Superman’s pal Jimmy Olsen with the telepathic gorilla villain Gorilla Grodd.

James Gunn debunks Gorilla Grodd series title reports

Fresh discussion about the series began after Gunn shared a Threads post featuring an on-set bingo card put together by script supervisor Keradacy. In the comments, one fan asked whether the Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd show had finally settled on a title and mentioned reports claiming it was called “DC Crime.”

Gunn quickly put that rumor to rest. “It is not and has never been called DC Crime,” he replied. Another fan agreed, saying, “I always felt it was an unoriginal title. Very simplistic. Just ‘DC crime!'” The exchange effectively ended months of speculation surrounding that name.

The project has sparked curiosity because of its unusual pairing of characters. One fan summed up the surprise by writing, “How on earth did this get presented to you guys? This sounds so insane.”

The commenter added that if they had been asked to combine two random DC characters, Jimmy and Grodd would never have been their choice but argued that the sheer randomness of the concept suggested there must be a “phenomenal story/script” behind it.

Separate reports recently suggested that the series could actually be titled American Villain. According to A Geek’s Viewpoint, the comedy series is listed as having one season planned for 2026-27. However, DC Studios has not officially confirmed that title either.

The show is being developed by Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creators behind American Vandal. Perrault previously said the crime-comedy format is familiar territory for them and hinted that they would bring “tools from that toolkit” that superhero projects have not explored before.

As for who’s expected to show up, Skyler Gisondo is reportedly set to reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen after Superman. Reports also suggest that Wendell Pierce, Mikaela Hoover, Christopher McDonald, and Beck Bennett will return as members of the Daily Planet crew.
