A debate broke out between fans of James Gunn's vibrant Superman movie and the devoted cult that swears by Zack Snyder's take on the character last year. This was when Gunn's reboot debuted theatrically to significantly better reviews than any of Snyder's superhero movies, but ended up grossing less at the box office than Man of Steel. Headlined by Henry Cavill, who'd return to play the titular character in two more feature films, Man of Steel marked the beginning of the ill-fated DC Extended Universe, which was followed by Gunn's markedly different DC Universe in 2025.
