James Gunn Teases This Major Character’s DCU Future Following Shocking Twist

James Gunn has given an update on the fate of a major DCU hero. Peacemaker Season 2 ended with Peacemaker (Chris Smith) forcefully exiled to Salvation, a planet meant to serve as a metahuman prison.

The finale only revealed that Chris is now trapped there and not much regarding what he’ll have to do to survive its unknown conditions. There has also been no confirmation as to whether or when he will next appear in the DCU.

What did James Gunn say about Peacemaker’s DCU future?

On Threads, Gunn was asked if he could provide an update on how Chris’ time on Salvation is going. The filmmaker didn’t reveal any specific details but did note “it’s not easy,” suggesting plans to further explore the character or Salvation in the DCU in the near future.

One character confirmed to return from Peacemaker in the DCU’s future is Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., whose season finale arc saw him strike a deal with Lex Luthor in exchange for support in locating the planet Salvation. Gunn has previously said that Salvation will play a prominent role in the DCU’s future storyline, one that will involve Superman.

Following the ending of Peacemaker, DC Studios reportedly registered a trademark for “Salvation Run”. The name refers to a seven-issue miniseries from writers Bill Willingham and Lilah Struges and artists Sean Chen, Walden Wong, Joe Bennett, and Belardino Brabo. In DC Comics’ Salvation Run, a group of supervillains is exiled to planet Salvation and must find new ways to survive.

As for Peacemaker, Gunn previously said that the character is “instrumental” to the DC Universe’s future. Some characters from Peacemaker are also expected to play a role in the upcoming Creature Commandos season 2. This makes a potential Peacemaker Season 3 unlikely in the near future.

Peacemaker and Superman are streaming on HBO Max. Man of Tomorrow releases on July 9, 2027.
