Jared Leto’s version of Skeletor in Masters of the Universe will not closely resemble the character’s earlier animated portrayals, according to director Travis Knight. The filmmaker recently revealed that the upcoming adaptation takes a different creative direction with the franchise’s iconic villain. He has focused on developing a portrayal that feels more intimidating and theatrical.
Why Jared Leto’s Skeletor is different from past versions explained
Travis Knight has opened up about the creative approach behind Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor in the upcoming Masters of the Universe. He revealed that the new version of the villain was intentionally designed to be different from the character’s classic animated interpretation.
Speaking during a recent ScreenRant interview, the director explained that the creative team wanted Jared Leto’s performance to respect the character’s legacy without directly recreating earlier portrayals from the animated series.
Knight noted that the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra: Princess of Power, Skeletor was voiced by Alan Oppenheimer with a deliberately exaggerated nasal tone that softened the villain’s frightening appearance for younger viewers.
He said, “So, when I was speaking with Jared, we recognized that we wanted to honor all those aspects, including a distinctive voice and an interesting laugh, but we did not want to engage in mimicry.” The filmmaker added, “We did not want it to be him doing an impression of Alan Oppenheimer.”
Knight said that he and Leto spent considerable time experimenting with the character’s voice before finding the right balance for the live-action adaptation. “It was important for him to get the voice right. So there was a lot of exploration to figure out,” he said. The director ultimately described the new portrayal as a combination of “menace” and “theatricality.”
Knight also discussed why the character remained “iconic” decades after the original series debuted. “I think most villains at that time, they looked cool or they were scary or they were funny or they were intimidating. Skeletor was all of those things,” he explained.
Masters of the Universe is scheduled to release in theaters on June 5, 2026.
