Jean Grey featured in the latest gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, helping the title character take out multiple opponents. While her appearance sparked excitement, the creatives’ confirmation of her non-playable status left some fans disappointed. Exclusively releasing on the PlayStation 5 on September 15, the game also features other major X-Men characters like Sabretooth and Mystique, apart from Jean.
Marvel’s Wolverine fans aren’t liking Jean Grey as an unplayable character
Jean Grey appeared in the Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay trailer, which debuted in the State of Play earlier this month. As shown in the footage, she assists Logan in performing finishers on enemies. She uses her telekinesis to lift them in the air while the latter stabs them.
Following a pre-screening of the trailer, IGN interviewed the game’s creative director, Marcus Smith, and game director, Mike Daly. While offering insights into the game’s mechanics and story, Daly revealed that only Wolverine would be playable. He also clarified that Jean and Sabretooth were in co-op segments controlled by the game’s AI.
Naturally, Daly’s confirmation upset some fans, who were initially excited about the possibility of playing as the telepathic mutant. One fan commented on a Reddit post, “It is frustrating as Jean Grey is not MJ.” Likening her and Wolverine to Wonder Woman and Batman/Superman, respectively, they added that her gameplay sections in the leaked footage from Insomniac Games’ ransomware attack and data breach were awesome. They continued, ” Really frustrating that they removed it. I wish the game was never leaked so we never knew about it.”
Meanwhile, another fan shared that while they were satisfied with playing only as Logan, they were still annoyed at the fact that Jean wouldn’t be playable. They wrote, “We literally SAW Jean Grey gameplay, it got so much hype, and to find out we won’t actually play as her a while after the leaks does make me a bit sad.”
Yet another deemed it “a missed opportunity.” They expressed hope of eventually getting a Horde Mode or a co-op and singular DLC where they could play as her and Sabretooth.
The backlash comes ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, widely rumored to include Jean Grey. Many fans believe Sadie Sink is playing her, with certain shots in the recent trailer fueling the belief. However, neither Marvel Studios nor Sony has officially confirmed this, let alone the actress’s role.
