The mystery surrounding who attacked Joel Marshall takes another dramatic turn in EastEnders next week, as a shocking discovery leaves several residents convinced they finally know the truth.
Joel has been recovering in hospital after being brutally attacked, but despite waking up, he insists he has no memory of who was responsible.
While Ross desperately tries to get answers from his son, Joel continues to claim he can’t remember anything about the attack, leaving the police investigation at a standstill.
However, Ross is stunned when he’s told officers have received several statements from witnesses that all back each other up, suggesting they’re starting to build a clearer picture of what happened.
Still determined to find out the truth, Ross keeps pushing Joel for answers, but gets nowhere.
Vicki steps in to support Ross, encouraging him to head home and get some rest. But once he’s gone, she finally finds the courage to visit Joel on her own.
Back in Albert Square, the group of teenagers gather to talk about the ongoing investigation and try to work out what’s happening next.
Their conversation is soon interrupted when Ross arrives demanding answers about who attacked his son.
Before things can get out of hand, Jean steps in and sends Lily home. But it’s what she learns afterwards that leaves her completely horrified.
Realising the information could change everything, Jean wastes no time in telling Jack what she’s discovered.
The pair quickly come to the conclusion that none of the local teenagers was responsible for Joel’s injuries, and decide the other parents need to know what they’ve uncovered.
Meanwhile, Ross heads back to the hospital, where he’s told Joel is well enough to be discharged the following day.
Unsure what the future holds, Vicki makes a huge decision and offers Joel somewhere to stay by inviting him to move in with them.
Joel is taken aback by the unexpected offer, but accepts the chance to return to Walford.
His homecoming doesn’t exactly receive a warm welcome, though.
As Joel arrives back on the Square, he’s spotted by Amy, Avani and the rest of their friendship group, with the atmosphere immediately turning tense.
Later, Jack fills the other parents in on the discovery he and Jean have made, hoping it will finally put an end to the suspicion surrounding their children.
But while the adults may believe the local teenagers have been cleared, the friends aren’t so convinced the mystery is over.
Determined to get to the bottom of what happened, they begin questioning each other, hoping someone will finally admit to attacking Joel.
The problem is, nobody does.
With no confession and Joel still unable or unwilling to remember anything, the mystery continues.
Elsewhere, Priya and Ravi sit down with Avani and Nugget to try and find out exactly what they know.
But the conversation is cut short when Priya learns that Joel has officially asked to stay in Walford permanently, with Avani’s opinion set to play an important role in the decision.
It’s news that’s sure to cause even more tension, especially considering Joel remains deeply unpopular with many of the teenagers on the Square.
As the week continues, Joel is met with more hostility from the friendship group, who make it perfectly clear they don’t want him around.
Feeling isolated, he eventually turns to Avani with an emotional plea, begging her to let him stay.
Will Jean and Jack’s discovery finally solve the mystery, or is there still another twist waiting to come out?
