It’s no surprise that Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) has turned to unorthodox methods to try and prove to Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches) that he can be a good dad in Emmerdale.

Kev hasn’t been back in the village for long, but he’s already causing trouble. After assisting in getting a kidnapped Lewis back from a woman called Kylie, Kev decided the aftermath of the ordeal would be the perfect time to tell the young man that he’s his biological father.

He didn’t reveal this news in the middle of a calm conversation, though. Kev sang Father and Son by Boyzone in front of Lewis, believing this was an ideal way to change his life.

Lewis has made it clear that he doesn’t want anything to do with Kev. Prior to leaving the village to spend time with his adoptive dad in Cleethorpes, Lewis told Kev that he hopes he’ll be gone by the time he gets back.

As we’ve seen over the past couple of days though, Kev hasn’t even contemplated going.

In this new video, Lewis returns home. As he chats to Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) and Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler), Lewis ignores Kev’s efforts of trying to get his attention.

He doesn’t have any choice but to glance over and see what Kev is up to when he refers to Lewis as ‘son’. As he exits his bakery van, Kev removes a piece of material from the front, and reveals that he’s changed the name to ‘Barton’s Cake Tin’.

Lewis asks Kev to change it back, and then gets the shock of his life when his biological dad confirms that his official name is now Kevin Barton.

Unimpressed, Lewis tells Kev to leave him alone.

The problem with the grand gesture is that it doesn’t actually make a lot of sense. Kev means well, but he should’ve explained the reason behind his decision.

Fortunately, this happens later in the week. It gives the moment a lot more emotional weight, and even strengthens his bond with Lewis.

Kev delves into the tragedy of what’s gone before for him, explaining how he became such a wrong’un, vowing never to back to prison. To him, the name change protects Lewis from his tragic background.

When Ross Barton (Michael Parr) walks in and is ready to throw fists at Kev, Lewis softens and says he wants to give his dad a chance.

The lesson Kev needs to learn from this? Honest conversations work far better than surprises.
