NBC and its creative team addressed one of the network’s most closely watched renewal decisions ahead of the 2026-27 broadcast season. The long-running drama’s future came down to the wire, leaving fans uncertain about whether the iconic series would survive the chopping block once again.

New report says Law & Order will soon be renewed for a new season

NBC will renew Law & Order for Season 26 during the 2026-27 broadcast year. Deadline exclusively reported that the show finalized its renewal close to the wire. The network plans to announce the official pickup on Friday, days before its upfront presentation on Monday.

Notably, Season 26 will not carry a “final season” designation, according to sources. The show may undergo budget trims, though specific details remain under discussion. Such cuts have become standard for long-running broadcast series with prominent casts, including Dick Wolf dramas on NBC.

Meanwhile, the mothership series unexpectedly landed on the bubble this season after scoring a renewal alongside Law & Order: SVU last year. The show lagged behind One Chicago and SVU in performance, though its linear viewership matched the latter. NBC kept its options open with a strong crop of five drama pilots in development.

Despite this, the revival had found its creative stride in its current season after a somewhat bumpy reentry following a 12-year break. The show carries a relatively small cast of six series regulars this season. Tony Goldwyn, Hugh Dancy, Maura Tierney, Reid Scott, Odelya Halevi and David Ajala all star in the series.

Additionally, NBC kept Law & Order on the bubble alongside sophomores Brilliant Minds and The Hunting Party this cycle. Brilliant Minds has already received a cancellation from the network. The Hunting Party remains in contention partly due to its Netflix run boosting streaming viewership on Peacock. Dick Wolf, Rick Eid, Alex Hall, Anastasia Puglisi and Peter Jankowski executive produce the series. Universal Television produces it in association with Wolf Entertainment.
