Pop legend Madonna has let her thoughts about artificial intelligence (AI) in art be known in an interview with Vogue Italia.

The Bring Your Love singer told the publication: “Once, you were around painters and musicians and dancers and artists in one place and working from a very pure place for each other. I value that experience a lot. Nowadays you don’t do that anymore.

“Now, to have a record deal, you think about how many followers you have. That’s why in Bring Your Love [a song she recently released with Sabrina Carpenter], I say, ‘Don’t try to distract me with numbers’.

“For me it started not thinking about the charts, the streaming numbers. Algorithms and artificial intelligence are the opposite of taking risks and to me that is the opposite of making art.”

The artist recently spoke about her creative process with Interview.

“It’s hard for me to write a song about nothing. I have to tell a story. So I wrote about a lot of family trauma, and then we started making dance music,” she told the publication.

She added that Confessions II was “meant to be”, mentioning “The song I wrote with my daughter, Lola. She approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship.

“It was a really important moment, and it solidified the idea that now is the time to make this record.”

It’s not the first time she shared her thoughts about the interaction of online life and music, either.

In a Q&A for Confessions II – The Film, she said that what she called people’s “persistent need” to document life around them needed to change.

“I came to this earth to be a doer, not a watcher,” she stated at the time, ending: “Put your fucking phones down and connect”.
