Matt Damon’s Secret Superhero Movie Adds Beef Star in Major Role

Matt Damon’s secret superhero movie just added one of Netflix’s biggest breakout stars. The Daniels’ mysterious Universal event film continues to build a stacked ensemble cast.

Beef star Charles Melton boards The Daniels’ untitled event film

Charles Melton is in negotiations to join the Daniels’ untitled event film at Universal, Deadline reports exclusively. The Beef actor will star alongside Matt Damon and Sandra Oh in the secretive project. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert will both write and direct the upcoming picture.

Specific plot details for the film currently remain completely under wraps. However, Kwan, Scheinert, and Jonathan Wang will produce through their production banner, Playgrounds. Notably, Playgrounds holds an overall deal with Universal, further strengthening their ongoing partnership. The studio has set a November 19, 2027, release date for the picture. Meanwhile, Sara Scott and Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for Universal.

Most recently, Melton appeared in Netflix’s hit limited series Beef alongside Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan. He earned strong reviews for his performance and is expected to contend this Emmy season. Additionally, he starred in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Her Private Hell, which premiered at Cannes.

Before Beef, Melton gained mainstream recognition playing Reggie Mantle on Riverdale from 2017 to 2023. He then earned critical acclaim for Todd Haynes’ 2023 drama May December with Natalie Portman. That role secured him Best Supporting Actor wins from the Gotham Awards and the New York Film Critics Circle. Furthermore, he received nominations from the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards. CAA and 111 Media currently represent the actor.

Oh, on the other hand, is best known for her Emmy-winning performance on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. She recently starred in the Lionsgate comedy Good Fortune opposite Keanu Reeves. Meanwhile, the Daniels won multiple Academy Awards for their previous feature, Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Universal had no comment on the latest casting development.
