Nearly everyone had to read Lord of the Fliesat some point in school, but strangely, there hasn’t been a definitive adaptation of the novel until now. Two cinematic adaptations tried to faithfully honor William Golding's story, but came up short in analyzing its thematic depth; the significance of Lord of the Flies is more obvious when looking at the derivative works featuring youthful protagonists. While there is an ongoing debate about whether the novel should continue to be taught, Netflix’s Lord of the Flies is a reminder of the story’s lasting power as a commentary on society, adolescence, and the corrupting influence of power. While a single film might not have been able to balance the complex ideas that have made Golding’s novel such a continued subject of fascination, this series adaptation expands the story in profound ways.
