The reviews for Netflix’s new show, produced by the creators of Stranger Things, have arrived. The Boroughs features a stellar cast, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, and Alfre Woodard. It received a positive response, with many highlighting the series’ tone and the dynamic between the ensemble cast.

The Boroughs’ reviews are highly positive

The Boroughs was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews and follows a retirement community in which Molina’s character assembles a team to defeat an unusual threat.

In her review of The Boroughs, Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter described the series as “Stranger Things but old people.” Han stated that, with the Duffer Brothers on board for The Boroughs, it carries a “sweet-spooky tone” similar to Stranger Things. She also suggested that the series takes a little too long to reveal the answers to the mysteries, but lauded the cast for their performances. Moreover, Han conveyed that “The Boroughs could have been an all-timer.”

Judy Berman of Time Magazine described The Boroughs as “the best of the three Netflix series” that the Duffer Brothers have worked on for Netflix. Berman praised the show for not portraying the more elderly characters as “cute or crotchety,” as Hollywood often does. She also mentions that the cast gave “sharp performances” and asserted that the team from The Boroughs “would be a fun hang.”

Priya Elan of NME called The Boroughs a “recognizable successor” to Stranger Things, adding that “unresolved traumas and a central, supernatural mystery” in the series take notes from the Duffer Brothers’ previous work. The review concludes that The Boroughs comes forward as “intriguing” and has elements of “family drama, shades of comedy, and moments of schlocky horror.”

Aramide Tinubu of Variety called The Boroughs a “delightful, intriguing adventure with some very unexpected heroes at its center,” also stating that the series is “heartbreaking” but also has a touch of fun and is “endlessly fascinating.”
