DC Studios finally gave Green Lantern fans exactly what they have been demanding since the first Lanterns trailer dropped. The new teaser footage reveals the superhero action and powers that were noticeably absent from the show’s earlier marketing.
James Gunn shares new Lanterns footage ahead of teaser
DC Studios co-head James Gunn teased new Lanterns footage on social media on May 17. He shared short clips with the caption, “Danger is part of the job. New #Lanterns teaser tomorrow.” The footage finally shows Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart leaping over a car in action. It also reveals Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan summoning a green shield to block a laser fired from space.
The clip marks a turning point for the show’s marketing campaign. The first trailer, released in March 2026, presented Lanterns as an extremely grounded crime drama. It drew heavy criticism from DC fans for barely featuring any Green Lantern powers or constructs. Social media users had accused the series of being “too grounded to be a Green Lantern show.” Gunn and the creative team apparently took note of the backlash before releasing this new footage.
Showrunner Chris Mundy previously addressed the controversy in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a Green Lantern show, so there’s green,” Mundy told the outlet. He also explained the show’s practical filming approach. “The aesthetic of the show – it’s supposed to be very grounded and real, so we’re shooting practically in places,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mundy further revealed that Lanterns takes place across two different eras. Specifically, scenes set in 2016 follow Hal and John investigating an alien-related shooting in the small town of Rushville. In addition, a separate storyline unfolds in 2026, after the events of Superman. However, details about the 2026 plot remain under wraps for now.
Ultimately, the full trailer arrives on May 18, with the series set to premiere on HBO and Max on August 16. As a result, fans can expect more Green Lantern action when the complete preview drops. The new footage suggests DC Studios is ready to fully embrace the superhero spectacle ahead of the August debut.
