Nicolas Cage, who headlines Spider-Noir, recently explained why the superhero series was shot in both black-and-white and color. He revealed in an interview that he recommended the creatives produce it in the latter format, in addition to the former, to cater to a younger audience.

Nicolas Cage says he suggested Spider-Noir should be shot in color as well

Cage revealed that he crafted his performance for the black-and-white version of Spider-Noir. He added that he also suggested producing the show in color to appeal to a teenage audience unfamiliar with the former format.

“I said, I’m all about the black and white. I designed my performance for black and white. And I’m glad I saw it that way,” he explained. “It was actually one of my ideas to have them shoot it in color because I’m aware of teenagers, and I’m aware they don’t have that much experience with black and white.”

The Academy Award winner further stated that the “dream” was for teenage viewers to see Spider-Noir in color and be prompted to see it in black-and-white afterward to “learn something.” “And maybe they go… hey, I want to see some of these movie references,” he continued. “And then they just open a treasure trove of wealth of a great American cinema. That’s the dream, I hope that happens.”

Notably, the interview shared on social media features a changing color filter. It slowly shifts from black-and-white to color during Cage’s explanation about the series’ two distinct presentation styles. It also briefly switches back to the former whenever the actor says “black-and-white.”

However, the one constant is the Rubik’s Cube-themed microphone, which retains its color throughout. Interestingly, this is a reference to Spider-Man Noir’s fascination with the combination puzzle in Into the Spider-Verse, in which Cage voices the character.

Spider-Noir will first premiere on MGM+ in the United States on May 25, 2026. It will then arrive globally on Prime Video two days later, on May 27. Oren Uziel developed it and also serves as the showrunner alongside Steve Lightfoot.
