‘I never want to see you again,’ I said between quick breaths.
Lying naked in bed having just had sex, I looked over at Claire*, my partner, next to me.
She stared back at me, also out of breath and confused.
‘I know you cheated with Andrea*,’ I finally said flatly, sitting up and putting my clothes back on.
‘Wait–’, she tried to protest. ‘But what about…we just…’
She was confused and stammering – not because I knew about her infidelity, but because we had just had the most mind-numbingly amazing sex of our whole relationship.
And I had waited until we’d both orgasmed to finally reveal that I knew she’d had sex with her ex the night before.
Not because I’m petty – well, I am a bit – but because I wanted to take back control of my emotions and my future.
Claire wasn’t the best person to get into a relationship with. She was non-committal, constantly moving from one girl to another – and in hindsight, I should have known and run a mile. But there was something compelling about thinking I was so special, I could make a girl like her commit to me.
I met Claire on Instagram – I saw her photo posted on a club night I regularly went to, and I liked the way she looked. After seeing we had a fair few people in common, I thought it was fine to follow her.
Minutes later, she followed back and three DMs hit my inbox.
‘Hey beautiful’, read the first one. Followed by ‘have we met?’ and ‘I would remember of course’.
I blushed, and wrote back, ‘No, I just thought you were fit’.
Giggling and staring at my phone, I found myself lost in a series of messages with this strange girl for the next couple of days.
Finally, we agreed to meet up for a drink. I told some friends, all of whom warned me of her past – apparently she was known to dump girls after sleeping with them. But after reading some of the messages she had sent me, even they wondered if she had changed.

It was the ‘I think you’re the girl I could settle down with’ kind of texts that really sold all of us on her.
But it was all lies.
I went for that drink, and Claire instantly made me melt. Sitting in a queer bar in Soho, we sipped cocktails while looking into each other’s eyes and smiling.
That night we went back to mine. The sex was good, but before I could even finish coming, she was out the door.
After making excuses about having to get up early, she waved and ran into the darkness. It was as if she was never there – all that was left of her was my quivering orgasm.
But she texted minutes later: ‘Had a great time, can’t wait to see you again.’
And so that’s how it went for us. We would meet, have sex, she would run away. Not long after the third night, she started calling me her girlfriend.
When, one night, I said I didn’t want her to leave instantly, she responded with ‘I can’t have my girlfriend upset, now can I?’. She stayed over that time, and left the next morning after making me some tea.
I was satisfied momentarily – but that’s when the rumours started.
Three months after we’d started seeing each other, I would come across people talking about her on a night out, saying things like: ‘Claire slept with [insert random girl’s name here]’.
I put it down to rumours, but so many things started to make sense. Her inability to stay with me, only meeting me for drinks, never introducing me to her friends, refusing to post about me on Instagram.
I had mentioned to her a few times that I felt like she was keeping me a secret, but she always had an excuse. Her go-to was: ‘I like my privacy.’
It all came to a head, though, when one day I opened Instagram and saw a message from Claire’s ex, Andrea.
‘Claire and I slept together last night. I thought you should know.’
That was it. No explanation, no apology. Just the facts.
Unfortunately, I was not surprised, and that upset me. I had been played – and that wasn’t like me.
I didn’t feel like myself at this point – so I decided to take back control. I was going to leave Claire, but after one last night, where I had the power.
Claire was due to come to mine that night, so I messaged her just saying that I was excited to see her. I didn’t want her to have any suspicions.
When she came in through the door, I grabbed her and kissed her. All I could think about was how she’d been kissing her ex – but instead of it disgusting me, it made me pull further into her.
I knew her dirty little secret, and she was none the wiser.
We got straight into bed, and started taking our clothes off.
‘What’s gotten into you?,’ she smiled. ‘I like it!’ We laughed and rolled around the bed, passionately all over each other.
We had the best sex we’d ever had, and I made sure to relish every moment.
After, when we came and I told her I knew about Andrea, I felt empty.
I wanted her to leave, but I knew it was the end of us. While our break-up was certainly needed, it still broke my heart – and I found it difficult to trust anyone for years after.
But I’m still proud of myself for taking control.
I was – and am – worth so much more.
