Paul Anthony Kelly Shares Why He Nearly Gave Up on Acting

Paul Anthony Kelly, who broke out with his role of John F. Kennedy Jr. in the first season of the FX anthology miniseries Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, revealed that he nearly gave up on acting. He further claimed that it was because of his wife’s encouragement that he held on long enough to land the smash hit role.

Before his immensely popular role in the first season of the FX anthology miniseries Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, Paul Anthony Kelly had a rather frustrating career, with no sign of a breakthrough for years.

After auditioning for parts for 13 years, Kelly was almost ready to give up on his acting career. But his wife, Syd Widziszewski-Kelly, made sure that he did not give up on his dreams.

“I remember sitting down with her, and we were just talking and I was like, ‘You know, I don’t think this is really working. Haven’t hit it yet.’ Thirteen years is a long time,” Kelly revealed on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle.

“We were thinking about starting a family, so it was like — what weighs more than the other? But she was like, ‘No, just stick it out,’ like, ‘Give it another year.’ And then a couple weeks later, I get this phone call for this, and here we are,” he continued.

Kelly said that the possibility of not making it as an actor was the moment that changed everything for him.

“I think that that’s exactly what happens,” he added. “Sometimes, when you let go …” Sheinelle Jones began, and Kelly completed, “Yup, the universe comes back and says, ‘Oh, let me get this for you.'”

Things worked out well for Kelly on multiple fronts. He also welcomed a baby in the same month that the series premiered.

Paul Anthony Kelly is also slated to join American Horror Story: Season 13.
