Port Devine is heading for the big screen as BBC commissions a feature length Hope Street special, set for release later this year.

The popular BBC One NI drama, which centres on the police department and local residents in the fictional town of Port Devine, has become a bit of sensation since hitting TV screens in 2021, with five series and over 50 episodes under its belt.

And now it will tackle the big screen, with a one-off feature length special in the works – which is said to ‘tie up loose ends’ – as the cast and crew reunite in Donaghadee.

One Of Our Own – A Hope Street film will see a violent crime committed against a much-loved local and the police investigation will see DS Marlene Pettigrew (Kerri Quinn) receive bad news.

There’s also a wedding in store, so let the speculation begin.

Filming commenced this week on One Of Our Own, with a theatrical release expected in Northern Ireland in September and further cinematic releases across the UK in October.

A Woman Of Substance star Niall Wright, who played fan-favourite PC Callum McCarthy in the first four series, is set to reprise his role for the one-off special.

Cameron Cuffe, who joined Hope Street during the fifth series as new police constable Donal Gallagher, will also star in the movie, making this the first time Callum and Donal will interact on-screen together.

Finnian Garbutt, who played PC Ryan Power, filmed scenes for the special film prior to his death earlier in the year.

Tara-Lynne O’Neill (Eve Dunlop), Niamh McGrady (Nicole Devine-Dunwoody), Marcus Onilude (Luke Jackson), Cameron Cuffe (Donal Gallagher), Katie Shortt (Brandi McClure), Eleanor Methven (Lois Dunlop), Paddy Jenkins (Seamie McCarthy), Jonny Grogan (Ross Dunlop) and RhéAna Kamalu (Chloe Jackson) will all return for the film, while Give My Head Peace star Tim McGarry, comedian Paddy Radd and actress Letitia Hector all join the cast.

Further casting details will be announced in due course.

Mary McKeagney, Commissioning Editor, BBC Northern Ireland said: ‘We hope this feature length film will provide the perfect opportunity to tie up some loose ends for fans. And with some new characters thrown into the mix, I’m sure there will be plenty of drama in Port Devine!

‘It is a bit of a thank you to all our audiences for engaging so enthusiastically with the series.

‘Thanks, too, to the cast and crew, past and present, for bringing us such joy across all five series so far, and to Northern Ireland Screen for their continued support, and to the people of Donaghadee for having us.’

Helen Munson, Commissioning Editor, BBC Daytime, added: ‘We are delighted to be working with Long Story TV to bring something very special to fans of Hope Street. What a treat to have a feature length special!

‘And it’s a joy to be filming in Northern Ireland again with our incredibly talented cast and crew, bringing Port Devine to life with its usual warmth, wit and charm’.

Hope Street boss Paul Marquess, who previously worked on Brookside and Hollyoaks to name a few, said: ‘How brilliant to be shooting Hope Street The Movie!

‘Hope Street has always celebrated Northern Ireland wit, wisdom and talent – and One Of Our Own will continue that tradition. It’s a joy to rejoin our friends in Port Devine and to get to work with our hugely talented cast and crew once again.’

Hope Street first hit screens in 2021, with the first series seeing new detective Leila Hussain (Amara Karan) arrive in Port Devine, which got all the locals talking

The subsequent series saw corrupt officer Al Quinn (Stephen Hagan) take over from Leila, while the third centred on detective Jo Lipton (Karen Hassan) – and her romance with PC Callum – plus the arrival of PC Ryan.

The fourth series saw big cast changes take place, with the departure of a number of favourites – particularly the O’Hare clan including Inspector Finn (Ciarán McMenamin) – which paved the way for the arrival of Inspector Eve Dunlop (Tara Lynne O’Neill), who remained at the centre of the show for the fifth, which saw PC Donal Gallagher arrive in Port Devine.

One Of our Own – A Hope Street film will release in cinemas later this year. Hope Street series 1 – 5 can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
