It has been almost a year since The Summer I Turned Pretty ended its three-season run, and it looks like Prime Video has finally found the next big romance TV show that will replace its Lola Tung-led hit series. As Off Campus officially debuts today, early reviews for the new college-set romance drama show have arrived online, suggesting that it will soon become everyone’s guilty pleasure.

Off Campus is led by The Crown’s Ella Bright and Until Dawn’s Belmont Cameli as Hannah and Garrett. In the show, their characters decided to enter into a fake dating deal with each other. It is executive-produced and created by Louisa Levy in her first major TV project as a showrunner.

“The college soap follows an elite ice hockey team, and the women in their lives, as they grapple with love, heartbreak, and self-discovery—forging deep friendships and enduring bonds while navigating the complexities that come with transitioning into adulthood,” reads the show’s official logline. “Season 1 follows the sexy and fun ‘opposites attract’ romance between quiet songwriter, Hannah, and Briar University’s all-star hockey athlete, Garrett.”

Why Off Campus will be Prime Video’s next big hit?

So far, Off Campus is shaping up to be one of this year’s biggest romance TV shows to debut. It has already garnered an incredible 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 11 reviews. Most critics are praising the show for adding an entertaining and interesting spin to the genre. Priscilla Blossom of TheWrap calls the new series “a wonderful addition to the wildly popular YA romance genre.” Meanwhile, FandomWire‘s Callie Hanna, who gave a 9/10 rating, wasn’t only impressed with its romance aspect and delightful supporting cast, but was also surprised by how the show “goes far deeper on its themes than it ever needed to.”

Eleane Kuiper of Screen Rant also commended the creative team for taking “a more Bridgerton-esque approach to the narrative, turning the show into an ensemble drama instead.” Jackie Varriano of Seattle Times also described watching the new series as “a marvel that bolstered my (her) faith in the power of frank communication, the importance of friendship, and how representation on screen can mean so many different things.”

Aside from the overwhelmingly positive reviews it has been receiving from critics, I think that Off Campus also features many qualities that you see in popular romance shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Heated Rivalry. The story centers around a fake dating plot, which is something that fans of the genre have always clung to due to the added tension it brings between the lead couple. Besides the romance aspect, hockey also factors in to the story, making it more exciting for viewers who are either fans of the sport or just sports romances in general.

On top of this, it also spotlights an ensemble cast of rising stars, which is more appealing to viewers. Oftentimes, for TV projects based on bestselling novels, fans are actually more interested in how the show will bring their favorite characters to life than getting a big-name actor attached to the adaptation. And with how the critics are describing Off Campus, I think Levy and the creative team have done a great job adapting Elle Kennedy’s popular novel series and doing right by those characters. This is why Prime Video has likely hit another jackpot with Off Campus. The streamer already knows it, too — they’ve already guaranteed the show’s Season 2 return.
