Although The Way Home has reached its conclusion, the Hallmark series was originally expected to continue beyond Season 4. The show’s executive producers have now revealed several ideas that they considered for a fifth season before the series ended. Their comments offer a look at character arcs, relationships, and storylines that fans would have seen next.
The alternate future planned for The Way Home for Season 5
Most recently, the Hallmark fantasy drama show’s creative team had outlined several storylines for a potential fifth season.
Executive producers Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke recently discussed the characters and relationships they would have continued exploring had The Way Home received another season. When asked if the writers ever seriously considered killing Elliot, Clarke made it clear that was never the plan. “No. I think if we’d had a Season 5, we would have ended Season 4 on is he alive or is he dead versus what we had to do,” she told TV Insider.
Moreover, one of the biggest priorities would have been the future of several key relationships. Conkie revealed, “I would have loved to have spent more time with the Jacob love story, see it grow a little more. And I would have loved to have spent a little more time with the Max Alice love story, and, of course, the Elliot Kat story. And I would have loved to have seen the Del and Sam relationship move forward.”
Meanwhile, Clarke noted that they had planned additional stories involving Griffin and Tessa. “I would have loved to have seen the Griffin [Charles Vandervaart] and Tessa [Kelsey Falconer] of it all, leading up to the jump a little more as well as what life looked like for them when they landed, and seeing the Landry family in that era,” she added.
Another mystery the writers intentionally left unresolved involved Claire and the fan theory connecting her to Alice. Conkie acknowledged, “That’s us being cheeky because there are some who actually think that Alice is Claire and vice versa. We left that open.”
Furthermore, Heather Conkie highlighted other characters she hoped to revisit, including younger versions of Fern, Cassandra, and Grayson. Season 4 of The Way Home premiered on April 19, 2026, with the series finale recently airing on June 21.
