As Spider-Noir debuts on Prime Video today, Marvel has given fans two viewing options for its newest live-action Spider-Man TV show. All eight episodes of Spider-Noir are now available to stream globally in “Authentic Black & White” and “True-Hue Full Color” on Prime Video. We’ve explained the reasons why each version delivers a unique viewing experience for fans.

In Spider-Noir, Nicolas Cage reprises the titular hero in the live-action for the first time since voicing the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It takes place in a standalone universe different from the animated film franchise. The series is created and executive-produced by showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, along with director Harry Bradbeer.

Which version of Spider-Noir should you watch?

Watching Spider-Noir in its “Authentic Black & White” version sets up the show’s narrative tone and visuals better than the color version. The black and white version also allows viewers to appreciate the story’s 1930s setting and gritty themes more through the Spider-Man character’s intended design. In a recent interview (via IGN), Cage shared that he “designed” his performance specifically for the show’s black and white version.

“So the dream is they (teenagers) watch it in color, and then they check it out in black and white and learn something, and then maybe go, ‘Hey, I want to see some of these movie references.’ And then they open a treasure trove of wealth, of the great American cinema. That’s the dream. I hope that happens,” Cage said.

As for its “True-Hue Full Color” version, watching Spider-Noir in color will also give fans a new and different perspective of the show. It grants viewers access to see more details of the characters’ world and costumes. During an interview with Cinema Blend, cast member Lamorne Morris believed that the full color version would allow viewers to have “a different exposure” to the story, where they’ll begin to notice and appreciate intricate details about the show.

Ultimately, it all comes down to the viewer’s personal preference for which version they’re inclined to watch first. Either way, Spider-Noir’s unique viewing experience will surely entice fans to watch the show twice, especially when the creative team worked so hard to make both versions special.

“I love both obviously. I have an affinity for the black and white, but we’ve worked so hard to make the color version special that I now kind of treasure it just as much. And they do give you two different experiences when you watch that way,” showrunner Oren Uziel explained. “So I kind of think watch the one that you are, you feel inclined to watch. You shouldn’t feel pressure to watch one or the other. But then give the other one a shot. Because you might find it to be really rewarding in ways that you weren’t expecting.”
