The first reviews for Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir series are here. The upcoming series takes a bold swing with the Spider-Man mythos and it seems to have paid off.
What are Spider-Noir reviews saying about the Nicolas Cage TV show?
Spider-Noir currently has an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 29 reviews, with most critics praising its visual aesthetic and Cage’s performance as Ben Reilly. Some, however, point out that the show starts to lose steam in the run-up to its finale.
Empire’s Alex Godfrey called its noir aesthetic having “keen wit and a sharp bite”, comparing Cage’s Ben Reilly to Humphrey Bogart over Peter Parker. Godfrey concluded their review by adding, “A big swing — oh, yes — that pays off from start to finish, this is an irresistible concoction, an utterly insane stew that somehow makes perfect sense. It is total joy.”
SlashFilm’s Bill Bria said that the show feels less episodic and more like a long story stretched out into instalments. But that’s not a big negative, as the reviewer ultimately ended up liking the show. “Spider-Noir is one of the most exciting and creatively fertile superhero works to be released in the last couple years, and while it may be a bit batty, I think it’s the bee’s knees,” said Bria in their review.
Collider’s Aidan Kelley liked the show enough to recommend it. Kelley compared the show to an Ed Wood movie, which is “largely due to its sci-fi theming and comedic pulp undertones”. The writer also noted that the show’s delivery in both color and black-and-white is more than a marketing gimmick. However, the reviewer also docked points from the show for having underwhelming villains. His review blurb on Rotten Tomatoes reads, “It may not be for everyone, especially for hardcore comic fans expecting something much grittier, but it’s also hard to deny that Spider-Noir is just a heck of a lot of fun.”

While that sounds great, not all reviews are positive, though. Variety’s Aramide Tinubu called the series a “beautiful bore”, acknowledging its visual prowess. While the show nails its film noir inspirations, the same also make it feel predictable. Tinubu wrote, “Spider-Noir is a lackluster, repetitive retelling of the same old vigilante tale audiences have seen time and time again.”
The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg also disliked the series, calling it an “inconsistent disappointment”. He also found the visual effects in the color version of the episodes to be “generally confusing and actively ugly”. Fienberg added that “the story of Spider-Noir is frustratingly dull, cribbing the barest of bones from various vintage gumshoe dramas and adding precious little.”
Spider-Noir is produced by Sony Pictures Television exclusively for MGM+ and Prime Video. Harry Bradbeer directed the first two episodes and also executive-produced them. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Uziel and Lightfoot developed the series with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal.
Spider-Noir premieres on MGM+ on May 25, 2026, and will be released globally on Prime Video on May 27. It will be available to stream in both black-and-white and in color.
