Fans gathered outside the Ed Sullivan Theater to bid farewell to Stephen Colbert’s final Late Show episode. The final episode aired on May 21, marking the end of the franchise’s 33-year run on CBS. Colbert hosted the show for 11 years after taking over from David Letterman in September 2015.

CBS announced the show’s cancellation last July, calling it “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” The Late Show held the best ratings for any late-night talk show for nine years running. Many observers saw the cancellation as a political gesture toward Donald Trump ahead of an $8 billion merger between CBS’s parent company Paramount and Skydance.

In a BBC video interview, fans expressed deep sadness and praised Colbert’s unique voice. “We’re just very sad that Steven’s leaving, and it’s just gonna leave a big hole in America,” one fan said. Another fan flew in from Amsterdam on an eight-hour flight without sleeping just to attend the final taping. “I would have really done anything to be here today,” the fan said.

Attendees highlighted Colbert’s ability to make difficult news accessible through humor. “He’s a very intelligent, well spoken, well thought out person who is able to make the news bearable through his comedy,” one fan told BBC. Another added that Colbert proved political opinion and comedy can coexist during really hard times.

Fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver and Seth Meyers recently reunited with Colbert to show support. The group previously formed the Strike Force Five podcast during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Colbert also reunited with Letterman for a segment destroying CBS property, reviving a beloved Late Show tradition.
