A Stranger Things spin-off show is currently in the works at at Netflix. While we still don’t know when it will release, the Duffer Brothers are making the right decision by exhibiting patience during its production.

Stranger Things wrapped up its historic five-season run for Netflix on December 31, 2025. The show is easily one of the five most important original shows in the streamer’s history when you take into account viewership, critical acclaim, and brand recognition.

With a show as popular as Stranger Things, figuring out a way to expand the universe becomes the next question. So far, there has been a stage adaptation, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, and an animated spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85.

However, the most anticipated spin-off is the one in development with the Stranger Things creators. As for when it will happen, the Duffer Brothers did not put a timeframe on when fans can expect to see the show on Netflix. They are making a deliberate decision to take their time.

“We’re being very careful. We don’t want to rush it. We don’t want it to be anything but excellent. No one wants to make it just to make it,” the Duffers said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “No one wants to just do it to continue Stranger Things. Like, it has to be awesome or forget it. That’s sort of everybody’s mentality about it.”

Why the Duffer Brothers are taking the right approach to the Stranger Things spin-off TV show

It’s only been five months since the Stranger Things finale. It is still fresh in the minds of fans, especially the divisive decisions regarding Will, Eleven, and the show’s ending. The worst thing the Duffers could do is rush to make something that fails right away. Look at Joey, a Friends spin-off, and Ravenswood, a Pretty Little Liars spin-off, as examples of shows that were rushed to air to capitalize on popularity but ultimately failed.

Stranger Things is also not the Duffers’ priority right now. They are currently working on an original film at Paramount. Writing a movie and conceiving a spin-off at the same time does set both projects up for success.

If the Duffer Brothers haven’t finished their plan for the spin-off, then it’s better to wait and perfect the details. The play and the animated show are enough to hold fans over for the foreseeable future.
