Maya Hawke‘s next Netflix project has taken a major step forward as production gets underway. The mystery drama is now filming, giving fans an idea of where the series stands. Netflix has shared a fresh update on the upcoming adaptation.

Netflix has confirmed that filming on The God of the Woods has officially started in upstate New York. Production is taking place across the Hudson River Valley and the Adirondack Mountains. It’s the same region where the story is set. Although the streamer has not revealed a release date, the start of filming suggests fans can expect the show to come out around mid-2027.

Based on Liz Moore’s 2024 novel, the series centers on the disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar. She goes missing from a summer camp. What starts as a missing-person case soon spirals into something much darker. It’s later revealed to be linked to a previous tragedy involving the same wealthy family. As the investigation unfolds, more hidden truths come to light, exposing old secrets and raising questions about power and privilege. The deeper the search goes, the more complicated the mystery becomes.

Hawke leads the cast as Judy Luptack, a determined investigator working in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Judy is described as the agency’s “first female investigator” and is assigned to solve the girl’s disappearance. Kerry Condon co-stars as Alice Van Laar, Barbara’s mother, who is forced to confront painful truths while searching for her daughter. The supporting cast includes Benjamin Walker, Nell Fisher, Damon Gupton, Ella Rubin, Susannah Perkins, John Gallagher Jr., Lola Kirke, Colton Ryan, Tracy Letts, and several others.

The series’ co-showrunners, Liz Moore and Liz Hannah, said they were “thrilled” to bring the production to the place that “inspired” the story. Speaking to Netflix, they shared that filming in the region where the story is actually set felt especially meaningful. They also had plenty of praise for the Adirondacks, describing the area as a place rich in history and natural beauty.
