DC had a very different vision for Supergirl before Milly Alcock took on the role. Ahead of James Gunn’s entry into the DCEU, another plan was in place for the superhero, with an actress who previously played Kara Zor-El set to return.

Here are all the details.

Sasha Calle’s Supergirl movie was ‘completely different’ from Milly Alcock’s

Screenwriter Ana Nogueira wrote a Supergirl film for the old DCEU that never saw the light of day. The project was tailored for Sasha Calle, who debuted as Kara Zor-El in 2023’s The Flash. Nogueira confirmed that nothing from that earlier script survived the transition to the new DC Universe.

“It was completely different,” Nogueira told Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t think I can even say what it was about, but it could not have been more different.” The overhaul was absolute. Character motivations, the film’s tone, and the underlying mythology all changed when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios. “Everything. Nothing transferred over from one to the other, which is crazy,” the screenwriter added.

Gunn and Safran reassigned her to craft a new Supergirl story, this time anchored to Tom King’s acclaimed comic run, Woman of Tomorrow. The plot follows Kara across red-sun planets. A young alien named Ruthye Marye Knoll begs her to avenge her murdered family. Kara refuses at first, but when the killer poisons Krypto, she races against a three-day deadline to save her last living link to Krypton.

The writer found unexpected value in her scrapped treatment. Learning the mechanics of Kryptonian powers proved essential. “There is a real thing when you’re doing this; you have to really onboard yourself on things like power set,” Nogueira explained. Understanding Supergirl’s strength limits and fight capabilities shaped her approach to the new script.

Sasha Calle herself harbored no bitterness about the Supergirl recasting. In a January 2026 interview, she reflected on landing the original role. “I’m so, so, so utterly grateful that it’s brought me into this world where I can make art,” she said. “I loved it.” Her debut in The Flash opened doors to projects like the Netflix thriller The Rip.

Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, now lands as a crucial piece of Gunn’s interconnected universe.
