Hawthorne's hottest pop unit, The Beach Boys, came surfing in from the waves of the Pacific and into the music industry, bringing sand, cars, and sunshine with them. The family musical group was a breath of fresh air in the 1960s, offering a much-needed escape from the tensions of the Cold War and the Vietnam War. But every khaki-wearing beach boy is bound to become a man, and their seminal 1966 work Pet Sounds was the turning point that pulled the rug out from under its fans.
